Rural and Town Churches, Wairarapa and beyond

I began a new direction in January 2023. I was browsing my library of photography books and Bernd and Hilla Becher peaked my interest, they had dedicated their art practice to documenting the industrial landscape that was rapidly disappearing in their time . Todays fast changing culture has had me thinking how different things were in our past, especially going back several generations. With a tripod and camera set to high resolution mode (I knew this was going to involve heavy cropping). I began to photograph the town and country churches in my locality. A few of these have already been sold for other purposes like cafes and sometimes converted into homes. One also recently (2021) burnt down on Langdale Road. Those remaining are still mostly being looked after even if not in regular use. I felt this was the right time to pursue this project as they still speak eloquently of our past.

McKee on 15 May 1875. This plaque was unveiled by the Governor General Sir Paul Reeves 3 June 1990. Lutheran Church, Marton. The foundation stone has inscribed Sept; 25th 1877. Erected in 1876, and enlarged in 1883. Founded by German immigrants who wanted a place where they could be free to live out their faith without compromise and government interference.

St Stephen’s Church in Marton. This is an Anglican Church which was founded in 1871. It was designed by George F. Allen of Whanganui in the perpendicular Gothic style.

Mt Ruapehu erupts every so often, sending a muddy sludge down the river which once caused the Tangiwai rail disaster.

The Anglican Church of the Epiphany, on State Highway 2, Masterton. The first service December 1911. Additions were made in 1972 by the architect Neil Inkster. The building was cut in and the southern end was moved south.

St Marks Anglican Church, Carterton. It was built in 1875 for £210, it had some additions in 1882 and mostly unchanged since than apart from the porch that was added in 1968. Situated on the corner of High Street South (SH 2) and Richmond Road. It is the oldest Church in the Wellington Diocese still in use.

St Andrews Union Church, Featherston. A small modest church that seats around sixty people. Apparently the combination of two churches, Presbyterian and Methodist.

St Patrict’s Catholic Church Masterton. Opened on the 5th May 1879. Architect; Mr Thomas Turnbull. The niche contains a sculpture of St Patrick which was obtained from Paris.

Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greytown. It is no longer a church, the cross has been removed from the steeple and it is up for sale. It was designed by Thomas Turnbull. The Transept was added in 1957 which was originally the Greytown courthouse built in 1883. It opened on Christmas Day 1880 and closed around the time of covid.

Gladstone church opened on 27 March 1904. Strange family donated land, Sir Walter Buchanan donated the church to the district for all denominations. Built by A R Wallis, designed by Varnham & Rose. The church was severely damaged in the 1942 earthquake. The church was reconstructed in timber in 1955.

Waiorongomai Church was consecrated in 1927 and was built as a memorial to Alfred & Hannah Mathews by their children. The church is located on the Western side of Lake Wairarapa. It was Alfred’s desire to have an ecumenical church in the area. The Matthews family continues to farm in the area.

St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Riversdale Beach. Constructed in 1881, the architect was Thomas Turnbull. It was originally located at Tinui but moved to Riversdale in 1981 and is available to other denominations in the Riversdale Community.

St. Stephen’s Kuku. From the sign; In 1844 Father Comte & the French priests of the Society of Mary established a mission station at Pukekaraka just outside of Otaki and baptised about 500 Maori. In 1854 Father Comte returned to France and for the next twenty years or so the Catholic Maori along the Kapiti Coast received only sporadic visits from itinerant missionary priests. In 1885 Father Francis Melu was stationed in Otaki and soon the Maori people of Ohau-Manakau-Waikawa asked for their own Church. St. Stephen’s Church became the first to be built on the Manawatui railway company line.

St Matthias’ Anglican Church constructed in 1921 in a revivalist style with a prominent bell tower. Designed by Clare and Williams Architects. Situated above the township on a small hill surrounded by a cemetery. The sign near the entrance reads Holy Communion 1st Sunday of even months so presumably this church is still in use.

James McWilliam a CMS missionary in Otaki. Dwindling numbers have recently called into question the future of the church.

St Andrews Union Church in Greytown. This church opened around 1880. St Andrews has been seismically strengthened and is still in use. This is the second church to be built on this site, the original church was a Wesleyan Methodist Church that is now at Cobblestones Museum in Greytown.

This building is on the site where Matai Taua pa once stood and was abandoned in 1846, shortly after skirmish broke out between Te Rangihaeata of Ngati Toa and British soldiers with local militia. In 1853 the land was purchased by Thomas Hollis State for farming. He donated this site for a place of worship and burial. The original church was built in 1857 and demolished in 1908 The present church is still in use with weekly Sunday services.

Though this building is a replica of the original church which was destroyed by fire, the result of arson in 1995, the replica was completed in 2003. The original was built under the direction of Te Rauparaha and missionary Octavius Hadfield in 1851, symbolising Maori and European desires to live peacefully. The unique design of the church incorporates both Maori and English design.

St John’s Methodist Church, Levin, opened in November 1936. Around 2015 the church was up for sale with some building issues and earthquake strengthening requirements. A church nearby decided buy, restore and return it to it’s original purpose as a church and community space. The church is now part of the Hope Centre, a Levin based Pentecostal and Evangelical organisation. The sign outside reads; Voice of Christ (Levin) Full Gospel Church and supported by local Pacific Islanders.

The Coast Road Church was built as a labour of love with out anyone receiving payment. The opening service was on 6th February 1866. The church fell into disuse in the 1950’s. The church is now owned by the Wainuiomata Pioneer Church Preservation Society Incorporated.

Rangitumau Church, a little North of Masterton. Erected and gifted to the district by station owners James and Mary Stuckey in 1898. Regular services for many years by Presbyterians, Anglicans and Methodists but now only sparingly for weddings and christenings and an annual Christmas service.

St. Columba’s Church, Architect was Frederick de Jersey, built in 1902 on Mangamahoe Road North East of Masterton on land gifted by A H Wrightson. It is now situated in the grounds of Solway College as their school chapel.

The Greek Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration. This small building is in the shape of the cross. It was the mission of a Wellington Greek immigrant named George Pantelis. The inside is quite extraordinary, the interior is beautiful, covered in iconic paintings by Stephen Allwood who was an art student at the time.
